Go Rydell/We Are The Union

So this weekend a couple of friends and I drove up to Tampa to catch Go Rydell and We Are The Union at Transitions Art Gallery, and come back down the next day to catch them here in SoFla at Solid Sounds. First off, I've got to say that both bands are comprised of some of the most friendly dudes I've ever talked to. Really awesome guys who really care about the music that they're playing. Chris from Go Rydell told me that he doesn't believe in his band having fans, just friends. Thats a statement that really means a lot to me in a scene where I honestly feel like many of the kids that I come across are stuck up about their band and their group of friends. At the Solid Sounds show, Reed from WATU came right off stage, and took 10 minutes to talk to us without even stopping to put away his guitar. Awesome down to earth guys, awesome awesome bands.

Go Rydell has some of the best energy I've ever seen on stage. Every time I've seen them they covered Lifetime, which is a HUGE plus. They have a 4 song demo out right now, and I've got to say, it absolutely rules. Reminds me of Kid Dynamite/Paint It Black/Shook Ones. Definitely check these guys out, good Florida band who deserve every bit of recognition.

We Are The Union will break every pre-existing notion you have about "Ska" bands. I put the word "ska" in quotes because they are hardly a ska band. They do have horns, but the music behind the horns is more reminiscent of Set Your Goals than of Reel Big Fish. Solid dudes, super fast, super catchy, and these guys are lyrically one of my favorite bands. They have a full length, "Who We Are" that you can download in its entirety on their purevolume, and a new EP, "The Gun Show Must Go On" out now on Paper + Plastik Records. Hit It Up.
